What is Your Organization’s Threat Level?
Any organization with public exposure and large economical infrastructure should remain vigilant concerning matters of mail handling safety. But how do you know what threat level your organization holds?
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued guidelines for best practices in mail handling and screening. As part of these guidelines, DHS urges organizations to assess their internal and external threat level.
Assess Your Threat Level
Some questions to ask yourself while performing this assessment:
-
Does your organization have close physical proximity to large populations?
-
Is your organization (or any individuals within the organization) involved in any potential controversy?
-
Is your organization’s mail handling center very visible to the public?
-
Does your organization have a high mail volume?
-
Do you have mail handling stations dispersed throughout the organization instead of in one separate location?
If you answered yes to any of these queries, you may have a higher threat level for suspicious packaging and toxic substances through mail distribution. It is imperative that you properly outfit your organization for optimal safety in mail handling practices.
